Mountain Flyer Ultralight Backpack – Community-Driven Design
The Mountain Flyer is a 40L backpack I designed specifically for the ultralight backpacking and alpine climbing community. The design prioritizes minimal weight and maximum functionality, providing a streamlined, modular carry system that adapts to the varied needs of backcountry travel.
Key project highlights:
User-Focused Design: Features an alpine-style, roll-top closure, external lashing and compression system, and an efficient frame structure to provide support while staying ultralight.
Open-Source Pattern: Released as a detailed sewing pattern and build guide, empowering DIY makers to customize the pack with their own material choices—from technical fabrics like X-Pac and Dyneema to more budget-friendly or recycled textiles.
Community Impact: Over 1300 pattern sales and hundreds of user builds showcased across forums like Reddit’s MYOG community. Makers worldwide have adapted the pattern to suit their needs, from ultralight hiking to specialized alpine pursuits.
Demonstrated Skills: Highlights my expertise in pattern drafting, prototyping, and community-driven design—enabling others to build durable, ultralight gear that reflects their own outdoor needs and aesthetic preferences.
This project illustrates my commitment to empowering others through open-source, flexible design—a philosophy that resonates deeply with the ultralight and DIY backpacking communities.
